Designing Learning Assessments
Ensuring that assessments are aligned with instructional goals, anticipated learning outcomes, and instructional strategies.
Criteria: Evidence of an assessment measuring and testing knowledge or skills aligned with the course goals, objectives, outcomes, and instructional strategies.
Artifact: Knowledge Check learning objectives and a grade sheet from a lesson of a course I currently maintain
Reflection
For the competency “Identify the learning processes and outcomes to be measured,” I used a knowledge check, learning objectives, and a grade sheet from a lesson in a course I am currently managing. I chose these artifacts because they are actively part of a course I am overseeing. The quiz is part of a series of quizzes and capstones developed to align with the daily lessons.
The daily knowledge checks are part of a six-week instructor-led course for new hires at my current workplace. The first two weeks of the course include daily quizzes to assess what the students have learned. The quizzes are graded and combined with their final capstone grade to determine if they pass. The knowledge checks and the final capstone are vital because failing the course could lead to termination.
When I joined this project, it was in the early stages of development. I collaborated closely with the SME to create knowledge checks that determined whether students understood the material being taught. In this course, students need to absorb a lot of information quickly, so I aimed to ensure they were comprehending the content. Each question in the knowledge check is assigned a specific number of points that influence the students' scores. I developed 10 knowledge checks and a capstone to evaluate what the students learned during the six-week course.
My experience with this artifact is still ongoing as I continue to manage the course. A key lesson I'm learning is how important it is to align learning objectives with the course content and knowledge checks to ensure students truly benefit. Since this course could be used for termination decisions, it’s especially vital that the knowledge checks support both the training and the final capstone. As the course evolves, I hope to not only maintain the current knowledge checks and capstone but also expand the checks and update the capstone to enhance the course.
NOTE: Due to privacy concerns, I’m only allowed to provide one knowledge Check.
